Tips on Buying a First Communion Dress

1. The communion selling season in the UK runs from January to May.

2. Because the selling season is so short, the dresses are generally made once per season.  The biggest choice is therefore usually available in January and dwindles from then onwards until May.  So to get the biggest selection of styles and sizes, you should really be shopping for your dress in January or as soon as possible thereafter. There will still be choice available in May but the most popular styles and sizes will be sold out.

3. Very limited numbers of plus sized dresses are available so if your child needs a bigger than average size, please shop early in the season. Linzi Jay sells six different widths of dress for each length so there is a dress for everyone which will not require expensive alterations if you shop early enough.

4. Before shopping for a dress, please check with your church or priest if there are any special requirements.  We have heard of many different rules and regulations on dress for example, dresses must be plain with no embellishment, dresses must cover the shoulders, dresses must be floor length etc.  Most churches do not have any rules but it is wise to check first.

5. We are occasionally asked if an ivory dress can be worn rather than a white one?  In our experience, very few girls wear an ivory dress although it is a little more common in London.  The danger in wearing an ivory dress is that it will look dirty next to a group of girls wearing stark white.  So if you can find a white dress, that is probably better.  The other reason to pick a white dress is that it can be difficult to find the accessories such as veils and gloves, in ivory.
